Card Games
Got any sixes (hope)? Go fish Got any twos (peace)? Go fish Got any sevens (seven always means ‘luck’) GO FISH My partner lays down a pair of threes Don’t, I tell myself Too late - I’m starving for significance Swallowing synchronicity and coincidence whole Not bothering to chew on the statistics Not everything is a prophecy But god just a little augury would taste so good Lamb guts and chicken bones Purpose as a palate cleanser to stomach the next bitter portion My partner asks if I want to try War next I say I don’t remember the rules They say I’ve been playing my whole life Slap Jack? It’s fun to anticipate pain Or violence The thrill of having the chance to smack someone To righteously chastise Old Maid? Ok, an easy one “Who’s the Old Maid?” Don’t pick the Queen God no one wants to end up there You get the privilege of her company YOU LOSE We play for a while until we get bored Or too drunk Bored with war and violence and crones The cards are shuffled and replaced We throw away the Jokers.
